José Luís Dias
I try to make my contribution to improve the Portuguese judicial system, making it more transparent, more accessible, faster, more effective and modern.
I have worked in the Portuguese Ministry of Justice since 2007, in different positions. Currently, I am Deputy Director General of Direção-Geral da Política de Justiça, helping strengthen and modernize several areas of the judicial system, such as the court's IT system, civil procedure legislation, legal aid, and court management or alternative dispute resolution.
Since 2016, I have been part of a citizen-centric approach project aimed at simplifying the language used in court communications with citizens and companies. It has been a challenging project, but with very interesting results.
Simplifying a Judicial Notification

In Portugal, the small claims procedure is used to facilitate and speed up debt recovery. Every year, the Ministry of Justice sends 200,000 such notifications to debtors. However, until 2018, understanding them was not an easy task. The consequences for debtors could be late payment interest, asset seizure and court fees.
Join us in this presentation to learn how we rewrote and redesigned this notification, leading to astonishing outcomes.
