How is plain language doing in Sweden? Questionnaires and interviews give the answer

Gabriella Sandström, Ingrid Olsson, and Karin Hansson

In Sweden, we have worked with plain language since the 1970’s. For the last 25 years, we have used regular questionnaires to survey the plain language work carried out by all c. 600 municipalities, county councils and state agencies. In addition to the latest survey in 2019, we also conducted in-depth interviews with 13 plain language practitioners. The result is clear: An increasing number of the authorities work with plain language, plain language work methods are now well-established as a standard and many employees take plain language for granted.
